Ahlan Wa Sahlan! Welcome to Petra!

Petra is a marvellous world famous historical site in Jordan and one of the seven wonders of the world, a real timeless appeal with it's hypnotic antiquity! An incredible architectural feat with stunning columns and facades carved from the sides of mountains, awash with connotations of ancient history, bible stories, and sheer beauty!

Petra is history come to life with unimaginable beauty and its ancient character literally carved from red mountains is like no other place in the world!

Located in a large valley of southern Jordan near the Dead Sea, Petra is an ancient archaeological site and the capital of the ancient Nabataean civilisation, a culture which thrived early in Jordan's history. The Nabataeans built stunning Petra as their capital city around 100 BC. The area served as an important locale for trade routes between the east and west, and Petra has seen its share of influences and rulers from Nabataean, Egyptian, Greek, to Roman. The site has been an area of many significant historical and culture events throughout ages from the time of their first crusades all the way back to biblical references as Petra's Mt. Aaron is reputed to be the burial place of Moses's brother Aaron.

Comprised of several tombs, temples, churches, and other important religious and archaeological wonders, Petra has enchanted people throughout centuries, drawing those in search of water, trade of goods, treasure, pilgrimage, and today, a preserved and awe-inspiring relic of history. Royal temples and tombs impress visitors with their Greek and Roman influenced architecture. Towering columns and facades of grandeur dazzle as they shine under the sun in hues of red and orange thanks to the sandstone from the mountains out of which they have been carved.

The Treasury and Monastery with their Classical architecture are surreal with their carved from red-rock appearance. You'll feel the charm and pull of Petra as many have for centuries as you wander through narrow rocky gorges, climb rocky mountains and stairs amongst desert-scapes, and see traces of cultures past. It should come as no surprise that Petra is both a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the seven wonders of the world.

Jordan is host to this world wonder and a wealth of sites in and around Petra all will have the explorer in you striking ground to uncover what some many have been draw here to see before. Located in the warm Arabah section of the Great Rift valley of Jordan, an area typically sparsely populated, the desert climate of Petra is understandably quite warm.
